Disempowerment and replacement are not inevitable, despite what corporate mouthpieces say. Instead, we can chart a better course to a future, a world where AI helps us achieve remarkable successes, but always remaining a tool, a world more deeply rooted in human nature, community, tradition, and transcendent belief of a humbler, wiser kind. Coming to this consensus would make the first Global Dialogue on AI Governance a success.

G20 Interfaith Forum is interested in having the views of faith leaders on AI at the discussion table. As we move into a new era where so many new things become possible, world religions - resilient institutions that have for so long cultivated wisdom about what is ethical and beneficial - have so much to offer. They have unmatched experience and reach in organizing communities, providing hope and meaning to people's lives, and tackling existential questions around purpose, personhood, and power. The selection is based on the AI and faith priorities.

Most of the world - approximately 84% of the population - believes in or subscribes to what might be called a traditional religion. Yet the perspectives of world religions on AI, what they fear about it and what, if anything, they hope for and want from it, are largely absent from strategic AI discussions.

AI has been given to much power and may eventually curtail human flourishing. It may be gradual or more rapid, but the disempowerment of humans seems extremely likely on our current course, as AI becomes increasingly agentic, general-purpose and advanced in its capabilities, at alarming rates of improvement. This is the race to artificial superintelligence, and it's happening before our very eyes.

AI Dialogue may be the glue that sticks when it comes to global AI policy. The Global South should have the same opportunities in using AI as a tool as the Global North. In order for AI tools to be shared equitably and for AI restraints to be put into place, a global initiative needs have the power to make a change. And AI Dialogue could be that change for AI policy.

The AI Dialogue should partner with G20 Interfaith Forum, which is trying to organize a research hub for AI recommendations, studies, and documents so that people can go to one place for AI resources. Also, the AI Dialogue should work in conjunction with the IEEE human flourishing and AI initiative, which is studying measurements for human flourishing in the age of AI.

I would format the structure into a general, short meeting and then break up into smaller groups allowing for discussions based on predetermined questions. Then, the feedback can be written up from each group allowing for thoughts to be documented and brought together.

Faith voices are not being included, nor are they being heard. Allowing for faith leaders to be at the table during these discussions is a positive step forward.

The use of surveys during discussions could allow for interesting studies to be conducted based on answers of the participants.
